I love ActionScript 3!
I have been digging deep into programming my own little weird games, writing ActionScript 3 code fulltime. I have a very long way to go but I am immensely relieved to discover that I am decently skilled at object-oriented programming. For a while there I was not sure if I had the mental chops to grok it. I don’t think I’ve ever more enjoyed any creative act (other than the nekkid kind) more than I enjoy programming. It is such a joy and a privilege to be able to do it for myself. I don’t think I’d enjoy it nearly as much if I made stuff for someone else, so this is not a fundamental career change. It ultimately is a means to an end, but I am so fortunate to love the means just as much as I hope to love the end. In any case, all the fates, I ask you to let me keep doing this.
I’m still figuring out what about it I find so fascinating. It may be the sense of total reality control, tapping into my inner God wannabe that arose as a game designer and playwright as well. It may be the constant supply of puzzles which allow many exhilerating “aha!” moments, but unlike abstract puzzles in books and games which I never liked much, solving these puzzles feels like a real and useful accomplishment.
One good book I am digging into is Essential ActionScript 3.0 (Essential). Now I understand firsthand so many things that previously I only took on faith by talking with and observing coders… one of them is knowing the allure of just one more coding book to put on the shelf. I also got a lot out of Advanced ActionScript 3 with Design Patterns
and Head First Design Patterns (Head First)
.

I want to get better at AS 3.0… can you recommend a good resource?
December 9th, 2008 at 3:12 pmOh definitely! I recommend very highly that book Essential ActionScript 3 by Colin Moock which I mention in my post above. If you buy it by clicking through the link in my post, I get, like, 10 cents! Mmm extra ramen for dinner!
The other books I mention are also good but Moock’s is the best IMO.
